Happy New Year, District 2!

The board wrapped up 2025 with a robust final meeting. I’m sharing a few highlights and updates below.

Check out this article highlighting many of the key accomplishments Dallas ISD achieved over the past year.

Dallas ISD has many educational choices for students in District 2 and throughout the district. If you are interested in applying for one of our specialty schools or programs or want to transfer to a legacy school, make sure you apply by Jan. 31 at www.dallasisd.org/choose.

Overview of a potential 2026 Bond Program: At December’s Trustee Bond Workshop, held before the board meeting and summarized in this Dallas Morning News article, Dallas ISD staff presented an outline for a potential 2026 bond program. The proposed framework, developed via a thorough process combining objective data and community feedback, was presented to the board for discussion and feedback. This month, we will further consider a potential 2026 bond, with a possible vote anticipated in February.

I appreciate feedback as the board evaluates whether to move forward with a potential 2026 bond proposal. If you have thoughts about things that should or should not be included, amounts, priorities, or anything else, I’d love to hear from you.

Golden years for the Golden Bears: Congrats to the South Oak Cliff football team on their fifth straight season reaching a championship game under Coach Jason Todd’s leadership. The Golden Bears clinched the Class 5A Division II state title with a decisive 35-19 win over the defending champion Dr. Thomas E. Randle Lions. Here’s to six in 2026!

I’ve chosen to highlight a few key items below from the December board meeting:

Dallas ISD changes election terms: Earlier this year, the City of Dallas moved its City Council and Mayoral elections from spring to November in odd (nonpartisan) years. There is a Texas law that requires Dallas ISD to align its elections with the city; therefore, the board voted to move ours to comply. Changes are summarized as follows:

May 2026 board elections will take place as scheduled:

  • Trustees up for election in May 2027 will shift to November 2027.
  • Trustees up for election in May 2029 will shift to November 2029.
  • Trustees up for election in May 2028 will, by random drawing, shift to either the November 2027 or November 2029 elections.

Trustee terms will move to four years, as elections will no longer be held in even-year elections.

As a result, five Dallas ISD trustees will be up for election in November 2027, aligning with the mayoral and City Council elections, and four Dallas ISD trustees will be up for election in November 2029, which aligns with non-mayoral City Council elections.

Student experience: While working to improve student achievement, the board also seeks to ensure high-quality student experiences. As measured by the annual student survey administered each October, the percentage of students reporting a positive campus climate increased by four points over last year, reaching 59%. By continuing to engage students through rigorous and engaging instruction, extracurricular opportunities, intentional campus community building, and student leadership organizations, Dallas ISD aims to sustain and further improve these results.

As always, please reach out to me if you have thoughts, ideas, questions, concerns, or just to say hello!

Best,

Sarah Weinberg
