The City of Dallas is preparing to respond to freezing temperatures as North Texans brace for winter weather over the weekend.

On Thursday, the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office issued a winter storm warning for virtually all of North Texas, with counties under the warning stretching as far south as New Braunfels. Travel will start to be impacted Saturday morning as a mix of freezing rain and sleet moves over DFW, according to the NWS forecast.

According to a release, Dallas’ Office of Emergency Management and Crisis Response plans to activate the Emergency Operations Center early Saturday morning. The Center pools resources from multiple city departments, such as the Dallas Police Department and Dallas Fire-Rescue, to coordinate the city’s response to inclement conditions. An inclement weather shelter will open in Fair Park at 4 p.m. Friday and will remain open while freezing weather triggers are met. Those needing transportation to the shelter can coordinate with 3-1-1.

Dallas Sanitation Services is warning of possible collection delays for both normal and bulky trash. If routes are delayed, customers are encouraged to leave their trash in place until collection resumes. Updates on collection timelines will be posted periodically on social media. Transportation and Public Works trucks will begin sanding roads on Friday evening, while Dallas Water Utilities has already started winterization efforts.

Code Compliance is encouraging neighbors to drip faucets, stay updated on the details of their renter’s insurance policies and open cabinet doors to allow for air circulation.
