One month from today, on Sunday, Feb. 28, the Bishop Arts Theatre Center will host a No. 1 New York Times bestselling author.
The author visit is a part of the So You Want to Talk About Race Banned Books Festival, hosted from Feb. 19 through March 8, 2026. The Banned Books Festival is more than just a night at the theatre, but allows the community to come in and “spark dialogue, challenge assumptions and ignite meaningful reflection,” according to the website.
This year’s festival will feature six short plays by local playwrights that explore the complexities of race, identity and social justice, inspired by So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo.
Oluo is a “writer, speaker and internet yeller” also known as the acclaimed author of Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America and the national bestseller BE A REVOLUTION: How Everyday People are Fighting Oppression and Changing the World – and How You Can, Too.
Her work on race has been featured in national publications such as The Guardian, The New York Times and The Washington Post. She was also named to the 2021 TIME100 Next list. Following the Feb. 28 performance, Oluo will participate in a post-show talkback and book signing.
The festival events will take place Thursdays through Sundays, with tickets ranging from $20-$60. Showtimes start at 7 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
The Bishop Arts Theatre Center is located at 215 S. Tyler Street.
