With the game in the rearview, the Wildcats (17-9, 9-1 District 7-6A) and Vikings (11-13, 2-8) may not play again for the foreseeable future after UIL’s district realignment on Monday. Starting next year, Nimitz and the other Irving schools will depart for District 8-6A.
After six seasons of sharing a district, Lake Highlands went 11-1 in games against the Vikings.
The Wildcats won tonight’s game in the last three quarters. After falling behind, 10-6, during the opening period, Lake Highlands rode a 9-0 run to close the quarter up 15-10.
Nimitz had a chance to recapture that momentum from the Wildcats in the second, but couldn’t contain Lake Highlands on the boards. The Wildcats took advantage, five of their seven field goals in the quarter coming on second-chance attempts.
Lake Highlands big man Uyiosa Osawemwenze was at the heart of that, his physical activity keeping plays alive and giving his team more opportunities. Osawemwenze recorded the first four points of the second and grabbed numerous offensive rebounds.
After being outscored 16-7 in the period, the Vikings found Kayden Frazier on a fast break for an easy layup with just seven seconds left until halftime.
Jay’Sean Wilkerson calmly took the ball out of the net and inbounded it to Jamion Broom. Broom dribbled the ball past halfcourt before pulling up for an off-balance 3-pointer from the top of the key. The shot fell in as the buzzer sounded and the Wildcats led, 34-19, at the half.
Broom continued to torture Nimitz in the third, as did all of Lake Highlands. Broom hit another two triples and a pair of free throws in the quarter as the Wildcats decimated the Vikings.
Lake Highlands ended up winning the period 26-2, holding Nimitz to zero made field goals and two for four shooting from the free-throw line. The Wildcats’ defense drove the run, forcing turnovers that led to easy baskets.
Kevin Turner, a bench sparkplug for Lake Highlands, scored all six of his points in the quarter. On the last of which, the Vikings lost the ball and it rolled towards the Wildcats’ basket as the final seconds of the period ticked away.
Just in time, Turner was able to scoop the ball up and lay it in for an easy two and another buzzer-beater as the Wildcats took a 60-21 lead into the final frame.
Everything else was simply cosmetic, with Lake Highlands able to go deep into its bench to close the contest. This meant the varsity debut for sophomore Tristan Hill and junior Hezekiah Jones. Each nailed a 3-pointer in the fourth, much to the delight of their teammates celebrating from the sideline.
Broom led the way for the Wildcats, recording a game-high 17 points. Osawemwenze added 12 and Wilkerson contributed nine.
Nimitz was led by Bryan Cuevas with 10 points. Ethan Moore scored seven in the first quarter for the Vikings but was only able to manage one point the rest of the way.
Irving Nimitz returns to action against Pearce (24-6, 8-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at home.
Lake Highlands can stretch its winning streak to five games as the Wildcats travel to Richardson to play the Eagles (16-12, 7-3) at 7 p.m. Friday.
