Lakewood Girl Scouts in Troop 6995 went behind the scenes at Woodrow Wilson High School Performing Arts’ production of 9 to 5: The Musical to earn their musical theatre badges.
Pictures (sent by scout mother Betsy Bessner) taken during the tour show the fifth graders watching a dress rehearsal of the musical and meeting a couple of the cast members last weekend. In return, the Girl Scouts brought the Dolly Parton-themed cupcakes and a signed card for the cast and crew, in addition to buying an ad in the musical’s program.
This activity was girl-led. Each month, two of the scouts are tasked with thinking of a badge to earn and leading the meeting, Bessner said. That job fell on the shoulders of Eva Bessner and Hannah Hintlian, who came up with the musical theatre badge. The choice was fitting given the timing and that Eva’s cousin, Katie Seeburger, plays Doralee Rhodes (portrayed by Dolly Parton in the 1980 movie) in Woodrow’s production.
“Overall, this was such a fun experience and great exposure to theatre arts in high school,” Betsy Bessner said.
The theatre production is based on the comedy and satire film (starring legends Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Parton) of the same name about women’s experiences in the workforce. As of this writing, tickets are still available for the shows at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 and 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8.
After their visit, the Girl Scouts had a message to the cast and crew of 9 to 5: thank you and break a leg!
