Let’s face it. Carpool time can be stressful — not just for the parents seeking to drop off their students safely, but also for the children anxious to run into the school and greet their friends and teachers. Moss Haven Elementary has a couple of advantages, though, that help their school days run smoothly. Moss Haven dads volunteer each morning to help students out of vehicles and into the building. And crossing guard Trecia Crawford aids the children trekking the journey on foot.
The MHE Dads Club recently surprised Crawford by gifting her a white Jeep SUV to help her get back and forth to school. The story was featured on NBC News’ national evening broadcast as Tuesday’s closing “feel good” segment.
“I feel so special,” Crawford told MPE dad Marcus Walther as he handed her the keys to her slick new ride.
A few months ago, the dads learned that Crawford’s car needed extensive repair work, so they raised $6,800 in just a few days. MHE dad Adam Tharp, general manager of Lake Highlands Automotive, found the perfect vehicle, tuned it up and threw in free oil changes. Jeremy Graves led the effort to prepay Crawford’s auto insurance and give her peace of mind.
“It can be freezing cold or pouring rain, but she’s always there,” Aaron Stevens told NBC’s Tom Llamas. “For us to be able to do something, to give a gesture of our appreciation for all she’s done for us — it was just really rewarding.”
