The Dallas Mavericks have officially announced a plan for the organization’s future potential home: the former site of the Valley View Mall.
According to a statement shared by the team, the Mavericks have entered into option agreements for the potential purchase of approximately 104 acres to serve as a location for the future arena and entertainment district.
In January, Mavericks CEO Rick Welts told The Dallas Morning News that the team had narrowed the future arena location to two sites, including Valley View and an undisclosed downtown location. Dallas City Hall specifically was considered a potential viable location with the future of the I.M. Pei building in question.
“The Valley View site meets most of the criteria established at the outset of our evaluation process,” the Mavericks said in the statement. “It is our goal to stay in the City of Dallas, and we believe this site provides the strongest opportunity to achieve that goal.”
Mayor Eric Johnson and City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert released a joint statement on the decision in support of the NBA team remaining in Dallas.
“We applaud the Dallas Mavericks organization for its continued commitment to our city,” they said. “We will continue working with the Dallas Mavericks throughout this process and will do everything we can to support the team’s enduring partnership with Dallas.”
