A student from Solar Preparatory School for Girls (on Henderson Avenue by Cochran Park) won third place in the 34th Annual MLK Jr. Oratory Competition.

Eight Dallas ISD pupils participated in the annual contest last Friday. The winner was Blen T. from Preston Hollow Elementary, followed by Cameron K. from Clara Oliver Elementary School in second place and Solar Prep for Girls’ own Kennedy K. in third place, according to a news release. (DISD censors the last names of students in its press releases.)

The participants were judged on their ability to deliver a three-to-five minute speech on the prompt, “As a student of Dr. King’s life, what message of hope do you think he would have for the world today?” They were expected to use lessons taught by Martin Luther King Jr. to craft their oration, according to the news release. Finalists took home prize money (supplied by sponsor Foley & Lardner LLP and an anonymous donor), a laptop, a personalized plaque and a goodie-filled gift bag.
