Because of the upcoming winter storm, the Latino Cultural Center on Live Oak Street has postponed a couple of its events.

“The Journey North: Hope, Labor and Culture – Latino Arts Project” opening reception that was supposed to take place on Friday evening has now been moved to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30. The exhibit will be on display from Jan. 30 through Feb. 26.

“This exhibition explores how an artificial border cuts across shared cultural experiences,” according to a Latino Cultural Center newsletter. “It reflects the physical and emotional reality of migration. A story of movement, purpose and resilience through art, stories and lived experience. The Journey North expands beyond why people leave to what they bring: hope that binds us in shared humanity, labor that builds and sustains the nation, and culture that continues to enrich and redefine American life.”

Likewise, “Roots & Rhythms: A workshop series by Texas Folklife and the Latino Cultural Center” was supposed to happen on Saturday, but that has been postponed. A new date hasn’t been announced yet.

“Texas Folklife and the Latino Cultural Center are partnering to launch the Roots & Rhythms Workshop Series celebrating the living traditions of Texas’ diverse communities through storytelling, music, dance and visual arts,” according to the newsletter. “Each workshop in the program highlights preservation and innovation, allowing community members of all ages to engage with tradition bearers, learn about folk art practices and experience cultural heritage first-hand. Each program will run two to three hours and will be offered on select dates for 2026 at the Latino Cultural Center.”

The event on Saturday was going to focus on storytelling and oral traditions, and participants were expected to make a community story quilt with words and drawings during the workshop.

Freezing rain and sleet is expected on Friday night, followed by more sleet on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. These conditions are supposed to taper off on Sunday night. A winter storm watch will be in effect for the weekend, and there’s an extreme cold watch from Saturday to Monday. This is expected to impact travel, and the National Weather Service advises us to protect our pets, check on older adults and be prepared for outages and emergencies.
