Temperatures appear to be warming up, but there’s still snow on the ground. So you may be wondering, “Is it safe to drive?”
I don’t have a straightforward answer for you. It probably depends on which roads you’re using. The City doesn’t apply treatment to all streets.
“Our sanding operations does not include residential streets, only bridges and major thoroughfares,” according to a statement from the Dallas Department of Transportation and Public Works to the Lakewood/East Dallas Advocate. “Residential streets may be sanded if requested by (Dallas Police Department) or (Dallas-Fire Rescue) in emergency situations.”
The statement also said, “The Transportation and Public Works crews continue to monitor city roads. Our crews are working around the clock in two 12-hour shifts by sanding and plowing bridges, overpasses, inclines and most major thoroughfares citywide, including East Dallas.”
Meanwhile in neighborhood Facebook groups, users are still posting pictures of snow-covered streets and warning others about the condition of the roads. One person commented that the streets aren’t that bad if traversed slowly. A few neighbors reported that roads are icy and slippery.
On Instagram, the Dallas Department of Transportation and Public Works recommends a few tips:
- Remember to wear your seatbelt.
- Drive slow and maintain a safe braking distance from other vehicles.
- Stay away from fallen wires and debris.
- A flashing or powerless traffic signal should be treated as a four-way stop.
To sum up and echo the wise commenters in a thread on The New Casa View Neighborhood Facebook group: if you must drive, do so slowly and cautiously.
