We asked Oak Cliff neighbors on Facebook to share their snow day experiences via story and/or photo submission. Here’s what they had to say.
Mary Madabhushi shared that the residents in the 100 block of N. Windomere Avenue had a proper ice rink. Allen Hueston had all the gear needed to play hockey, minus the skates.
She also wrote that sledding with the Dallas skyline in the background was surreal.
Ida Tenorio submitted a photo from keeping warm inside.
Finally, Les Brumit submitted a memory from snow days past. Here’s what he had to say:
I’m a ’65 graduate of Sunset High School. One winter, we had a good amount of snow. Good enough that we felt like W.T. White, the superintendent of Dallas ISD at the time, would cancel school for the day. He didn’t. There weren’t many at school that day.
Forward a few years later. In the late 70s or early 80s, I was a member of the Oak Cliff Lions Club. That occasion was more likely late 80s, while I was an insurance agent, and they were both retired. Sitting across from me that day were H.S. Griffin and Dr. W.T. White. I asked them about that day the school was not canceled. Mr.Griffin told me that it probably should have been because Dr.White slid off the road and broke his arm.
Also, that day I was the tale twister for the Lions Club. My job was to fine members a dollar for interesting stories as that. So I had the honor of fining Dr. White for that incident. It was a good day.
