A community survey regarding the Oak Cliff Skatepark at Westmoreland Park is still seeking responses following the third design input meeting held last month.

The survey will be available for responses until Monday, Feb. 9. As for the skatepark project schedule, February marks the beginning of Stage 3, which includes design and construction documentation and will run until June.

The previous two community input meetings gathered opinions and demographic information from over 50 local attendees and over 100 responses to a prior survey.

Some of the first feedback received by city leaders included the importance of incorporating local art, culture and native plants into the design. Many community members shared the desire for brick and granite to reflect Dallas street spots and colors that reflect the Latin communities of Oak Cliff, according to a presentation by the City of Dallas.

Additionally, respondents indicated the desire for park design to accommodate all wheels, meaning to allow BMX participation in addition to skateboarding.

Based on the initial concept of the skatepark, the second community input meeting presented the design into two options: the Street / Bowl Concept and the Linear Street Plaza Concept. Key items such as the accessibility of the park, safety, comfort and interaction of the design with the local environment were brought up as important points of consideration for the design.

The latest community survey focuses on understanding which of those concept designs the community favors, along with other feedback on what the respondents value beyond the concrete landscape.

The next phases of fundraising for the skatepark will also kick off soon. Phase II will raise money for a shade structure, and Phase III will raise money for a small amenities center with restrooms.
