The deck park above Interstate 35E has officially set an opening day.
Halperin Park will host an opening ceremony starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, with festivities throughout the weekend, according to the park website.
Halperin will be the second deck park for the City of Dallas, in addition to Klyde Warren Park, and has been coined by the Southern Gateway Public Green Foundation as a “park with purpose.” The new space was designed to honor the history of Oak Cliff and reconnect neighborhoods that were separated by the 1950s highway construction, according to the release.
Features for the opening celebration will include live performances from local musicians and dance troupes, food and beverage options, yoga and fitness classes and activities for the family from the children’s playground and splash area to story time and arts workshops. As it will be Mother’s Day weekend, there will also be the opportunity to make cards and build-a-bouquet for mom on site.
The opening day events are presented by Amazon, providing financial support to the foundation and to the visitors with chances to win giveaways for children’s books, home electronics and gift cards, according to the release.
“What began in 2016 as a bold yet simple idea to build a literal and figurative bridge in the heart of Southern Dallas is now just weeks away from becoming a reality,” April Allen, president and CEO of the Southern Gateway Public Green Foundation, said in a press release. “Our opening represents the collective vision and determination of countless supporters to build something that will transform our community and impact the lives of our neighbors for generations to come.”
