The friendly folks at our Lake Highlands North Recreation Center are asking neighbors to help collect 1,000 pieces of #2 HDPE recyclable plastic for a competition with centers all across town. The first recreation center to collect 1,000 items and send them to the City of Dallas’ Materials Recovery Center will win a Buddy Bench and a party complete with food and t-shirts.
HDPE (high-density polyethylene) #2 plastic items include milk jugs, water jugs, juice containers, margarine and yogurt tubs, shampoo and conditioner bottles, detergent containers and bleach bottles. Look for the tell-tale triangle with a 2 inside.
Buddy Benches were created to foster inclusion on the playground, particularly for the new kid in class, the last to be chosen for kickball or the child often found alone. Sitting down on the Buddy Bench is an invitation of sorts. Joining another is an acceptance of friendship.
The contest runs through April 15, and items may be dropped at the LHN Rec Center, 9940 White Rock Trail.
