Spring break is now well in the rearview mirror and Dallas ISD is full speed ahead to the end of the school year. The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees was busy during the month of March, and you can find the details below.

Dallas ISD District 7 monthly update:

Election Day for the $6.2 billion Dallas ISD bond is Saturday, May 2, but you don’t have to wait that long to cast your ballot. Early voting begins Monday, April 20, and runs through Tuesday, April 28. If you want to learn more about the Dallas ISD bond proposal, visit its website, which has a wealth of resources, including project scope by district and a tax impact estimator.

Sunset Debater of the Year reflects: Congrats to Sunset High School student Alaysha C. who was named as a national finalist to represent Dallas ISD.

Dallas ISD basketball sweep: Bring out the rings! James Madison, Justin F. Kimball, and David W. Carter high schools swept their respective division at the UIL state basketball championships this year under the lights of the Alamodome in San Antonio!

March board meetings debrief

Universal pre-K: I am proud to have supported providing free, high-quality prekindergarten to all Dallas ISD students. High-quality pre-K builds strong educational foundations for all kids and helps close gaps between disadvantaged students and their peers. Research indicates that students who attend pre-K outperform the students who do not by 30% in kindergarten readiness.

Pre-primer: Students can build a stronger foundation for school success through Dallas ISD’s pilot pre-primer program. Designed for children who did not attend pre-K or kindergarten, or who need more time before first grade, this extra bridge year focuses on early reading, math, and social skills using age-appropriate instruction. Similar to programs long offered in many private schools, the pre-primer program allows students to be part of a broader developmental pathway so they enter first grade confident, prepared, and ready to learn.

Student voyages: Dallas ISD students are participating in high-quality educational enrichment experiences throughout Dallas this spring. Experiences directly tied to work in the classroom include Dallas Zoo, Perot Museum, Dallas Arboretum, and Dallas Environmental Education Center. Year to date, 48,000 students have participated with the district on schedule to complete an incredible 670 field trips this semester. These efforts are made possible through a partnership with Lyda Hill Philanthropies. Next fall, a full menu of universal field experiences for students in kindergarten through eighth grade will be introduced. If you would like to serve as a chaperone on one of these voyages, please complete the interest form here.
