Demolition of Lake Highlands Junior High began this morning to make way for the opening of Lake Highlands Middle School in August. Tearing down the building is expected to take several days.
Richardson ISD announced in 2021 they would move from a junior high to a middle school education model, moving sixth graders up to alleviate crowding on elementary campuses. The plan is being implemented first in the Lake Highlands Learning Community, with additions to and extensive remodeling at Forest Meadow and an all-new building for LHJH. LHJH was built in 1956, but a facilities assessment recently commissioned by RISD determined that the district’s oldest junior high building was inefficient and expensive to maintain.
If you’d like to swing by with your kids and watch the demo crews at work, your best plan is to park on Chesterton Drive and walk east along the alley, where you can peek through the chain link fence. Folks at the Bethany Childhood Development Center at Grace Church just west of the school have respectfully requested that folks not park in their parking lot and interfere with their construction crews and preschool program drop off and pick up.
